Ordinances & Resolutions

Please find attached, under “Supporting Documents”, the Town's register of Ordinances and Resolutions adopted by the Town Council from 2006 to the present.

Each register contains the Ordinance or Resolution number, date passed/adopted, descriptive title, and the recorded votes of each Town Councilmember.

The registers are updated following the official adoption of items by the Town Council at a duly convened Council meeting.

Below are definitions outlining the purposes of Ordinances and Resolutions within a municipal government:

ORDINANCES

In local government, an Ordinance is a law or regulation enacted by a municipal or county governing body, such as a Town Council or Board of Commissioners. Ordinances are specific to the local jurisdiction and address matters of local concern, often concerning public health, safety, and welfare.  Ordinances can cover a wide range of topics, including zoning, building codes, traffic regulations, noise control, and other matters relevant to the local community.

RESOLUTIONS

A Town Council Resolution is an official statement or decision made by the Town Council to express its position, establish a policy, or address a specific issue within the jurisdiction of the Town.  The Council passes Resolutions to make decisions on matters that may not require a full Ordinance but are significant enough to warrant an official stance.  Resolutions are primarily used for actions that don't create new laws or change existing ones. They are more about administrative procedures, policy statements, or expressing opinions on non-binding matters.

While both are formal actions of the Town Council, Resolutions are generally considered less formal than Ordinances. Ordinances are used to establish, amend, or repeal laws, whereas Resolutions typically address administrative matters or express the Council’s position on specific issues.
