Cutler Bay Celebrates Earth Day at Gulfstream Elementary

CUTLER BAY, FL – May 26, 2026 - The Town of Cutler Bay celebrated Earth Day last month with students at Gulfstream Elementary School during a hands-on educational event focused on environmental stewardship, stormwater awareness, and the importance of protecting local waterways.
Held on April 22, the event allowed students to learn about the water cycle, understand how stormwater runoff affects the environment, participate in an interactive stormwater demonstration, and help plant a butterfly garden on campus. The activities were designed to help students connect environmental lessons with real actions they can take at school, at home, and in the community.
Senator Alexis Calatayud, Representative Omar Blanco, Mayor Tim Meerbott, and members of the Cutler Bay Town Council attended the event and joined students in the activities. Together, they helped plant the butterfly garden and participated in the educational demonstrations, reinforcing the importance of clean water, pollinator habitats, and environmental responsibility.
As part of the town staff presentation, students learned how stormwater runoff can carry soil, oil, pesticides, fertilizers, trash, and other pollutants into storm drains, which can then flow into streams, lakes, and the bay. The presentation also highlighted simple everyday actions that help reduce pollution, including properly disposing of oils, avoiding over-fertilizing, picking up pet waste, keeping yard clippings out of streets, and preventing litter.
“Earth Day is a great reminder that protecting the environment starts right here in our community,” said Mayor Tim Meerbott. “Cutler Bay cares deeply about our environment and our future, and we are proud to work with our local schools, students, and partners to preserve green space and teach the next generation why environmental stewardship matters.”
A video recap of the event features Mayor Meerbott, Senator Calatayud, Representative Blanco, Gulfstream Elementary Principal Marlene Iza Rodriguez, and members of the Town Council discussing the importance of environmental education, conservation, and community partnerships.
The Town thanks Gulfstream Elementary School, Principal Marlene Iza Rodriguez, teachers, staff, and students for welcoming the Town and helping make the event a meaningful learning experience. The Town also thanks Senator Calatayud and Representative Blanco for joining the celebration and supporting the students throughout the activities.
