Too often, unused prescription drugs find their way into the wrong hands—which is dangerous and often tragic. That's why the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) is hosting its 22nd National Prescription Drug Take Back Day on Saturday, April 30.

This bi-annual event seeks to prevent addiction and reduce overdose deaths by accepting free, anonymous disposal of unused, unwanted or expired medications at more than 4,000 local drop-off locations nationwide. One of the host sites in Cutler Bay is the Walgreens located at 20340 Old Cutler Road, on Saturday, April 30, from 10 AM to 2 PM.

“Disposing of unneeded medications can help prevent drugs from being misused,” said DEA Administrator Anne Milgram. “Overdose deaths continue to hit tragic record highs. I encourage everyone to dispose of unneeded prescription medications now.”

Some of the medications accepted include:

  • Vitamins
  • Prescription Medication (Schedule II-V controlled & non-controlled substances)
  • Prescription patches
  • Prescription ointments
  • Pet medication
  • Over-the-counter medication

Items not accepted include:

  • Needles
  • Inhalers
  • Thermometers
  • Aerosol cans
  • Lotions or liquids
  • Hydrogen peroxide

This event is made possible through Coalición Esperanza in collaboration with South Dade One Voice Community Coalition, Town of Cutler and the Miami-Dade Police Department.
